Blackjack Card Counting
What is card counting?
Card counting is a method of keeping track of the ratio of high cards to low cards remaining in the deck or shoe. It is not about memorizing every card that has been played. Instead, you keep a single running number that rises when low cards come out and falls when high cards come out.
Why does that number matter? High cards (10s, face cards, and Aces) help the player. They create more natural blackjacks — which pay 3:2 — they make doubling down more profitable, and they make the dealer bust more often when forced to hit a stiff hand. Low cards (2 through 6) help the dealer. So when a lot of low cards have already been dealt and the remaining shoe is rich in high cards, the player has a temporary advantage. A counter bets more in those moments and bets the minimum the rest of the time.
How counting cards works
Every card counting system assigns a value to each card. In the most popular system, Hi-Lo, the values are:
- 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 → count as +1 (low cards leaving is good for you)
- 7, 8, 9 → count as 0 (neutral)
- 10, J, Q, K, A → count as −1 (high cards leaving is bad for you)
You add these values as cards appear to keep a running count. A high positive running count means many low cards are gone and the shoe favors you. Because the edge depends on how concentrated those high cards are, you then divide by the number of decks remaining to get the true count — the number you actually bet and make decisions on. Hi-Lo is a balanced count: if you counted down a full deck perfectly, you would end on exactly zero.

Running count vs true count
The running count is the raw total you keep as each card is dealt. The true count converts it into a per-deck figure so the count means the same thing whether you are one deck or five decks into the shoe.
The formula is simple: true count = running count ÷ decks remaining. A running count of +6 with three decks left is only a true count of +2. The same +6 with one deck left is a true count of +6 — a much stronger signal. You estimate decks remaining by glancing at the discard tray. Every betting and deviation decision is based on the true count, never the running count.
Does card counting really work?
Yes, but the reality is far less dramatic than the movies. A good blackjack game has a house edge near 0.5%. A skilled counter playing perfect basic strategy and spreading their bets correctly can flip that into a player edge of roughly 0.5% to 1.5%. That is a genuine, mathematically real advantage — but it is small, and it only shows up over a large number of hands.
To get there, several things all have to be true:
- Favorable rules — blackjack pays 3:2 (not 6:5), and you can double and split freely.
- Good penetration — the dealer deals deep into the shoe before shuffling.
- Near-perfect play — basic strategy errors quickly erase the small edge.
- A bet spread — you raise your bet meaningfully when the true count is high.
- A bankroll — the edge is small, so swings are large; you need enough to survive variance.
Modern casinos fight back with continuous shuffling machines, shallow penetration, 6:5 payouts, and the right to bar winning players. None of that makes counting illegal — it just makes it hard work for a thin edge.
Is it worth learning?
For most people, card counting is worth learning as a way to truly understand blackjack — why basic strategy works, where the house edge comes from, and how the count shifts the odds. As an actual income source it is demanding and increasingly impractical for casual players.
